The Hingham art gallery owner whose English mastiff bit two people - including Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield’s wife - is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow to face charges based on the incidents, which occurred about a year apart.
Megan Ullman is facing charges of reckless assault with a dangerous weapon, causing serious bodily injury, disorderly conduct, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Her husband, Robert, has sent a letter to police asking that the charges be dropped, pointing to the couple’s contributions to the town over the years.
“I made a mistake, and I’m truly sorry,’’ she said in a phone interview yesterday. “I don’t understand why they have to be over-the-top and why they have to be so cruel and awful,’’ she said of her critics, who argued the dog should be put down.
The first incident took place in June 2008, when their dog Gabriella bit Hingham resident Stacey Wakefield. At the time, the shop was supposed to have been locked and closed by Megan Ullman.
This past June, Krista Brewer of Braintree was attacked when she entered the store under similar circumstances.
That incident occurred after Hingham police and the town’s animal control officer, Leslie Badger, prohibited the Ullmans from bringing Gabriella and their other mastiff, Gabriella’s son, Spartacus, into the gallery.
Selectmen voted unanimously last month to have Gabriella euthanized. But under a ruling from a Hingham District Court magistrate, the dog will instead be sent to a New York shelter.
Meanwhile, the Ullmans will be closing the gallery next month and are packing their bags to move to Florida. The move, Megan Ullman said, has long been in the works and is not related to the recent turmoil.
Still, she said, “It’s been an enormous emotional strain for me, my husband, and Gabby’s son.’’
